Waypoint 2: The Deep Brook Trout Restoration Project
Deep Brook is a Class 1 Wild Trout Management Area, one of few in Connecticut. Up until the early 2000s, it had been neglected and suffered from multiple environmental problems, including water pollutants, significant erosion, invasive plant infestations, and a declining population of native brook trout. In 2007, a comprehensive water monitoring system was installed, a critical component of the multi-year restoration effort in Deep Brook. Since then, multiple organizations, including Candlewood Valley Trout Unlimited and the Town of Newtown, have worked to restore the in-stream, riparian and buffer habitat, through pollution and erosion control.
