Waypoint 1: The Start of Al’s Trail

Al’s Trail is a 10.7 mile trail that runs through a natural greenway in Sandy Hook and Newtown. The trail winds its way through a state forest, a state park, town forests, town open space and private property. Along the way one can see eagle roosting areas, a family-owned vineyard, abandoned garnet and feldspar mines, steep rock cliffs, and one of Connecticut's best trout streams.

Informational markers, just like this one, are stationed in various locations along the trail. These markers were installed in December of 2021 as part of an Eagle Project of Troop 370. The informational markers are part of a larger, federally-funded project to revitalize Al’s Trail and to make the nature around us more accessible for the community to enjoy.

Please do your part in keeping our woods healthy! Make sure to stay on the marked trails and please carry all of your trash out. Thank you!
