Waypoint 8: The 2018 Macroburst
The Macroburst of May 2018 was one of the most severe weather events to occur in Connecticut in many decades. Across the state, there were four significant tornadoes that brought straight line winds and caused significant damage across the state, with an average of $70,000 dollars in damages per home. The whole storm consisted of a macroburst, a microburst, and 4 tornadoes.
The high winds tore up trees, power lines, and other structures throughout Newtown. Drone footage from Sandy Hook neighborhoods showed that the winds were able to simply punch stands of trees over and into the ground. According to the National Weather Service, winds reached between 100 and 110 miles per hour across the storm’s path through Newtown. The storm ripped through the woods you are currently standing in, as demonstrated by the scarred trees and the early-successional forest growth.
Newtown ended up with only some minor injuries during the storm or during repairs, but two people lost their lives across the state during these severe weather phenomena.
